Believe it or not, the historical role of bridal was not to make sure the bridal got to the wedding in a fit state to be married. In fact, groom originated to protect the bride and her dowry on the way to a negotiated union, where everything was counted out and measured to bind two families together in a dynastically satisfactory manner. And virginity was the sine qua non. With brigands and outlaws often controlling the highways, a bride might well require a fearsome escort to keep her maidenhead intact.
In some early traditions, the groomsmen were called Bride’s Knights, either to indicate their protective function or (in some cultures) because they helped the groom kidnap the bride and carry her off to be married.
The whole idea of dowries and bride prices is another fascinating topic. Of course, no one really does the dowry thing today—at least not in the west. (This reminds me of a story Madhur Jaffrey, my favorite Indian chef, told on her BBC program: A beautiful girl was to be married to a very wealthy Indian prince, who stipulated that her dowry should contain enough olive oil for her to prepare his favorite eggplant dish forever. The bride duly went on her wedding journey with a caravan of hundreds of vats of olive oil behind her—enough to fill a lake.
Six months later, she turned up at her father’s door sobbing. The olive oil was all gone, because as everyone knows, eggplant soaks up olive oil like a desert soaks up water.)
That’s neither here nor there, but I’ve been looking for a chance to tell that story for a while…
Back to groomsmen: the best man, in fact, at first was placed next to the bride during the wedding ceremony so he could continue his protective duties. But jealousies ensued, and at some point the best man moved over to the groom’s side for good.

In ancient Rome, groomsmen dressed just like the groom (as bridesmaids did like the bride) to confuse the evil spirits, so they wouldn’t know who was getting married and cast a bad spell over the union.
Nowadays, groomsmen have a less exalted but equally important function in a wedding: Namely to ensure that guests are seated in the appropriate places (which is why they used to be called ushers), and that bridesmaids and single, unescorted women get to dance and have fun at the ceremony. They also help plan the bachelor party and decorate the wedding getaway car, as well as attending all the pre-wedding festivities as appropriate.
Groomsmen—like bridesmaids—are responsible for paying for their own attire. But lucky you! You can rent yours for a fraction of what many bridesmaids have to pay. You do have to coordinate with the groom, however, so all of you probably have to rent or buy from the same place.
Frankly, I’m into the English tradition of a morning suit. No one does that in the U.S., unfortunately… But looking dapper is still de rigeur. After all, you never know what it could lead to. And I was thrilled to find this oh-so-British site, Andrews & Pigott, with a blog about the right way to tie a cravat or a tie for formal dress. Superb!

Wedding party history plays a big part in the roles of the bride's attendants and groomsmen in modern day weddings. In most cases, the bridal party doesn't realize that this custom was initiated with the groomsmen instead of the bride's attendants. The history of weddings is actually quite interesting. Keep reading for more interesting facts!
Actually the bridal party began with an Anglo-Saxon tradition. In this tradition, friends of the groom were given the role of guardians or body guards of the bride. It was their duty to make certain that the bride made it safely to the wedding and later the groom's home. She should arrive at both places with her dowry and herself intact. This is how the term bride's knights originated. It evolved into bridesmen and later into groomsmen.
In some cases, the groom actually kidnapped the bride with the aid of his friends. If the bride's family was opposed to the wedding, the groom's friends would form a sort of army to fend off the angry mob while the groom made a getaway with his bride in his arms.
